Big-Data around the world: Data Transfer Nodes tool design

Large-scale scientific projects generate very large amount of data that often need to be transferred across the network. Standard transport protocols and conventional computers do not always adequately utilise the large transfer capacity offered by Research and Education networks. This lightning talk will briefly summarise the work done at GEANT for setting up Data Transfer Nodes, a set of high-throughput servers carefully tuned and equipped with ultra-high speed network interfaces, directly connected to our IP backbone. We will explain the different possible uses of the tool, both from the NRENs as wells as from the users perspective; we will also launch a “call for help” to R&E users, to help us with the design of a testing tool based on the aforementioned DTNs.
